Booklet helps consumers save money on auto insurance

Consumers may be able to save hundreds of dollars per year by shopping around for auto insurance, according to a survey by the Oregon Insurance Division.

In the survey, major insurance companies were asked to provide annual rate quotes for typical drivers in various Oregon cities. Rates varied widely among the 24 companies responding to the survey. For example, the annual premium for a family with a teenage son living in Bend ranged from $496 to $1,399.

Survey results are included in the Insurance Division's free booklet, Consumer Guide to Auto Insurance. The booklet also includes tips consumers can use to save money on auto insurance.

The best way to cut your insurance costs is to maintain a good driving record, since drivers with clean records receive the lowest rates. Another way to save money is to ask your insurance agent or company if you qualify for any discounts. For example, you may get a discount if your daughter has good grades or has completed a driver education course, or your car has air bags or other safety equipment.
